Welcome

We are thrilled that you will be coming down to the Outer Banks to celebrate this special occasion with us. Whether you choose to stay for the night or take a vacation and stay for the week, we hope that this information will be very helpful in finding the perfect place to stay.

Getting to OBX | What to do when you are there

The Outerbanks are located on the east coast of North Carolina just below the Virginia border and is made up of a string of narrow barrier islands that stretch along more than 175 miles of coastline.

Flying:
The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport. It is approximately 90 miles away from the Outer Banks. The carriers to the airport include:

• American
• Continental
• Delta
• Northwest
• Southwest
• US Airways

There is also an airport in Newport News/Williamsburg, VA, which is only another 20 miles up the highway from Norfolk. The airlines that fly in are: AirTran, Delta, and US Airways. It may be a cheaper alternative, so it is worth checking out if you are flying.

Driving:
Since most people will be coming from the north (except for Jay Whittle, who already knows his way!), here are directions on how to get to the Outer Banks via Norfolk, VA.

From the Washington, DC metro area

• Take 95 South
• Continue on 95 South approximately 75 miles until you get close to Richmond.
• Take exit 84A toward Rocky Mount, NC and proceed 15 miles south on I-295
• Take exit 28A toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach and proceed about 75 miles on I-64
From here you can either take I-64 or I-664 before the tunnel. We recommend I-664, because the tunnel traffic can sometimes be heavy. If you take I-664, stay on it until you can join I-64 East.
• Continue on I-64 until you reach exit 291 (291-B) That will put you on US-168 South (Chesapeake Expressway toll road).
• Follow US-168 into North Carolina about 35 miles, where it connects with US-158
• Take US-158 about 30 miles until you go over the Wright Memorial Bridge
• Then you're on the Outer Banks!
• From here take a left on NC-12 to go north to Corolla or you can stay on U-158 to travel down to Kitty Hawk and Kills Devil Hills. . .

From the North (anywhere above Maryland)

If you're coming from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, CT, you may choose to bypass DC. Here's how. . .

. . . After you cross over the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the second exit should be for US-13 and US-301 South
• Take that exit and stay 13 South (301 South splits off)
• Stay on 13 South all the way through Delaware (wow, that's interesting country!), into Maryland, and then into Virginia
• You'll go over the Chesapeak Bay Bridge-Tunnel (over and under the water)
• Once you're back on dry land Route 13 continues until it crosses I-64. So, take the exit for I-64 South and follow it until you see signs for "Nags Head"
• Take the exit for "Nags Head", which is US-168
• Follow US-168 into North Carolina about 35 miles, where it connects with US-158
• Take US-158 about 30 miles until you go over the Wright Memorial Bridge
• Then you're on the Outer Banks!
• From here take a left on NC-12 to go north to Corolla or you can stay on U-158 to travel down to Kitty Hawk and Kills Devil Hills. . .
